For businesses to invest and grow, it is vital they can access the right people with the skills they need.
The Greater Cambridge economy has a particular need for skills in professional science, bio-medical, clean-tech, technology, and advanced manufacturing. Often referred to as the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths – these skills are in high demand.
Connecting young people with business
City Deal aims to help young people secure the skills and they need to succeed in the Greater Cambridge 21st century economy, and create job opportunities. By working with partners across education, training and business, we will:
- Create an additional 420 Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships across Greater Cambridge by 2019.
- Support employers to increase training and to bring business, training providers and the local community together to develop training that meets employers’ needs and support growth.
- Work with the National Careers Service to ensure young people in Greater Cambridge have access to the very latest information about the local jobs market, helping them to make informed career choices.
- Forge stronger links between businesses and the education sector to encourage a greater uptake of training and apprenticeships.
Signpost 2 Skills
Funded by the City Deal partnership and Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and delivered by social enterprise 'Form the Future', Signpost 2 Skills aims to raise aspirations and help young people develop the skills they need for a successful working life in a modern economy.
Since its launch in January 2016, the programme has already held a number of successful events allowing local employers to meet students from schools across the area to offer advice, showcase opportunities and help them make informed decisions about their future career, training or study path.
